JSA Accepting Applications for Academic Year 2010-2011 Graduate Fellowships at the Jefferson Lab

About the JSA/Jefferson Lab Graduate Fellowship Program
The JSA/JLab Graduate Fellowship Program is funded by the JSA Initiatives Fund. JSA will award fellowships to qualified doctoral students at SURA member universities for research related to the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (Jefferson Lab) in Newport News, Virginia. Each fellowship will provide the awardee's home institution with a stipend equal to up-to-half of a normal academic year (~9 months) research assistant stipend. The awardee's home institution must agree to match at least half of the research assistant stipend from institutional or research funds. An additional $2,000 supplemental stipend is provided to the awardee's home institution for the graduate student. JSA also will reimburse up to $2,000 for the awardee's research-related travel subject to the approval of his/her advisor. Funds for the 2010-2011 Graduate Fellowship Program are limited. JSA reserves the right to award an amount based on the institution's current research stipend.

Ninety days after completing a fellowship, awardees are required to provide a written report to JSA on accomplishments during the period of the fellowship, including:

  • Results of experimental or theoretical research undertaken at Jefferson Lab
  • Summaries of talks or lectures based on such research
  • Copies of preprints/publications based on such research

Purpose
The JSA/JLab Graduate Fellowship Program contributes to addressing the nation's commitment to grow our future science leaders and researchers by providing the environment and financial resources for graduate students to work alongside Jefferson Lab researchers as they continue their academic studies and pursue research opportunities in this specialized field of science. Since the Fellowship Program was first established in 1989, 149 fellowships have been awarded to graduate students from nineteen different SURA member institutions for research at the Jefferson Lab.
