First established by the SURA Board of Trustees in 1989, this Program has been continued by JSA for doctoral students at SURA member universities conducting research related to the theoretical and experimental programs at Jefferson Lab, including nuclear and related particle physics, accelerator physics, associated science and engineering, and free electron laser program.
Each fellowship award is comprised of one-half of a normal academic year (~ nine months) research assistant stipend, plus a $2,000 supplement. The home institution must agree to match half of the research assistantship. The award includes up to an additional $2,000 for university approved travel support for the student
Eligible students must be enrolled full-time in a relevant doctoral program at a SURA member university. Awardees may not concurrently hold another major full-time fellowship or internship. Students may apply at any stage of their graduate careers or while undergraduate seniors. Awards are limited to two years and students seeking second-year support must resubmit a complete application.
Awardees are selected based on: merit and quality of proposed research; utility and relevance of proposed research to Jefferson Lab and proposed utilization of Lab resources; academic qualifications; letters of recommendation; likelihood of accomplishment of proposed research objectives by graduation.
The JSA/JLab Graduate Fellowship Program is managed and administered by the SURA Office of Strategic Services on behalf of the JSA Programs Committee. JSA solicits proposals annually in December.
