JSA Accepting Applications for 2010-2011 Sabbatical and Research Leave Support at the Jefferson Lab

About the JSA/Jefferson Lab Sabbatical and Research Leave Support Program
The JSA/JLab Sabbatical and Research Leave Support Program is funded by the JSA Initiatives Fund. JSA will award living expense support for up to two faculty members from SURA member universities who will be on sabbatical or research leave at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (Jefferson Lab) in Newport News, Virginia. Each award consists of $1,500 per month for six to twelve months to faculty members who must relocate to the vicinity of the Lab for their sabbatical leave. Awardees must undertake full-time research at the Jefferson Lab for the duration of an award. Individuals are limited to one award in a five-year period. Ninety days after completion of a sabbatical/research leave, an awardee is required to submit a written report to JSA that includes the results of experimental or theoretical research performed at the Lab, and copies of preprints and publications based on research performed at Jefferson Lab.

Purpose
The JSA/JLab Sabbatical and Research Leave Support Program enhances research opportunities for faculty through access to Jefferson Lab facilities and interaction with Lab researchers and users, strengthens the teaching and research capabilities of universities through faculty involvement, and strengthens the research programs of the Lab by attracting “new blood” and integrating university faculty members in the Lab's programs.

Eligibility
A regular tenured or non-tenured faculty from a SURA member university is eligible to be considered for support if he/she:

  • can make effective use of the facilities and staff of the Lab to advance their research;
  • can make a significant contribution to the research programs of the Lab, including programs in nuclear and related particle physics, accelerator physics and associated fields and the free electron laser program;
  • can provide evidence that his/her home university agrees to the sabbatical or research leave for the period for which JSA support is requested; and,
  • must relocate to the vicinity of the Lab during their sabbatical or research leave.

Ineligible are: retired or retiring faculty; individuals seeking only summer support; faculty holding joint Lab appointments; faculty who can reasonably be expected to commute to the Lab during sabbatical/research leave period and do not need to relocate.

Important Dates
Application materials are due by January 22, 2010. Award announcement is planned by March 31, 2010. Support for awards made for this period may begin as early as June 2010. Upon request from the awardee, JSA will consider modifying start and end dates as it deems reasonable.
